Facts about the flag of Costa Rica

Date adopted: 27 November 1906

Symbolism: The blue stripes represent the sky, opportunities, and perseverance. The white stripes symbolize peace, wisdom, and happiness. The red stripe stands for the blood shed for freedom and the warmth of the Costa Rican people. The coat of arms includes the country's seven provinces, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea.

  • Pantone colours: Blue, White, Red
  • Aspect ratio: 3 : 5
  • Hanging protocol: The flag is typically hung with the blue stripe on top, followed by white, then red in the center, then white, and blue at the bottom. When displayed vertically, the red stripe should be on the left.
  • Design pitfall: A common mistake is confusing the flag with that of Thailand, which has similar colors but a different stripe arrangement and proportions.
