Facts about the flag of Austria
Date adopted: 1 May 1945
Symbolism: The red-white-red pattern is said to have originated from the Babenberg dynasty's coat of arms. Legend has it that the red and white colors symbolize the blood-stained tunic of Duke Leopold V of Austria after a fierce battle, with the white stripe representing the part of the tunic covered by his belt.
- Pantone colours: Red, White
- Aspect ratio: 2 : 3
- Hanging protocol: The Austrian flag is typically hung horizontally with three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and red, with the red bands on top and bottom and the white band in the middle.
- Design pitfall: A common mistake is confusing the Austrian flag with the flag of Latvia, which has similar colors but a darker red and a narrower white stripe.
