Facts about the flag of Latvia
Date adopted: 27 February 1990
Symbolism: The Latvian flag's red color is said to symbolize the readiness of the Latvians to defend their freedom and independence, while the white stripe represents peace and honesty. According to legend, the red color also represents the blood shed by a Latvian leader who was wounded in battle.
- Pantone colours: Pantone 201 C, White
- Aspect ratio: 1 : 2
- Hanging protocol: The flag of Latvia is typically hung with the carmine red bands horizontal and the white band in the middle, ensuring the white stripe is centered and the red bands are equal in width.
- Design pitfall: A common mistake is confusing the Latvian flag with the flag of Austria or Peru due to similar horizontal stripes; however, Latvia's red is darker (carmine) and the white stripe is narrower.
