Facts about the flag of Philippines

Date adopted: 12 June 1898

Designer: Emilio Aguinaldo

Symbolism: The flag's colors and symbols represent the country's history and ideals: the white triangle stands for equality and fraternity; the blue field for peace, truth, and justice; the red field for patriotism and valor; the sun represents independence; and the three stars symbolize the three main geographical regions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

  • Pantone colours: Blue 286, Red 186, White, Yellow 116
  • Aspect ratio: 1 : 2
  • Hanging protocol: The flag is typically hung with the blue field on top in times of peace and the red field on top in times of war.
  • Design pitfall: A common mistake is displaying the flag with the red and blue fields reversed during peace time, or not recognizing that the flag is displayed upside down during war.
