Facts about the flag of Cuba
Date adopted: 20 May 1902
Designer: Narciso López
Symbolism: The flag of Cuba consists of five horizontal stripes of blue and white, with a red equilateral triangle at the hoist containing a white five-pointed star. The three blue stripes represent the three old divisions of the island: central, occidental, and oriental. The two white stripes symbolize the purity and justice of the patriotic cause. The red triangle represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence, as well as equality, fraternity, and freedom. The lone star within the triangle is a symbol of independence and freedom.
- Pantone colours: Blue 2945 C, White, Red 186 C
- Aspect ratio: 1 : 2
- Hanging protocol: The Cuban flag is typically hung with the red triangle on the hoist side (left) and the stripes horizontal, with the top stripe being blue.
- Design pitfall: A common mistake is reversing the flag so that the red triangle is on the right side, which is incorrect.
