Facts about the flag of Uruguay

Date adopted: 11 July 1830

Designer: Joaquín Suárez

Symbolism: The Sun of May symbolizes the Inca sun god Inti, a symbol of freedom and independence. The nine stripes represent the original nine departments of Uruguay.

  • Pantone colours: Blue, White, Yellow
  • Aspect ratio: 2 : 3
  • Hanging protocol: The flag of Uruguay is typically hung with the white and blue stripes horizontal, and the Sun of May in the upper hoist-side corner.
  • Design pitfall: Sometimes the flag is mistakenly hung with the Sun of May in the lower fly-side corner or with vertical stripes instead of horizontal.
