Symbolism: The red field represents the struggle for national liberation. The black triangle represents the obscurantism that needs to be overcome. The yellow triangle represents the traces of colonialism in Timor-Leste's history. The white star, or the 'Star of Hope,' represents peace.

- Hanging protocol: The flag is typically hung with the black triangle at the hoist side, the yellow triangle inside it, and the red field extending to the fly side, with the white star centered in the black triangle.
