Facts about the flag of Sri Lanka
Date adopted: 22 May 1972
Designer: Nissanka Wijeyeratne
Symbolism: The lion represents the Sinhalese ethnicity and bravery. The four bo leaves represent Buddhism and its influence on the country. The orange stripe represents the Tamil minority, and the green stripe represents the Muslim minority.
- Pantone colours: Yellow, Orange, Green, Maroon
- Aspect ratio: 1 : 2
- Hanging protocol: The flag is typically hung with the lion holding the sword facing the hoist side (left side), with the orange stripe nearest the hoist and the green stripe next to it, followed by the maroon field with the lion.
- Design pitfall: A common mistake is reversing the flag so that the lion faces the fly side (right side), which is incorrect.
