Facts about the flag of South Korea

Date adopted: 25 January 1950

Designer: Park Yeong-hyo

Symbolism: The flag features a red and blue Taegeuk in the center, representing balance in the universe. The four trigrams around it symbolize heaven, earth, fire, and water.

  • Pantone colours: Pantone 186 C, Pantone 294 C, White, Black
  • Aspect ratio: 2 : 3
  • Hanging protocol: The South Korean flag is typically hung with the white background facing outward, the red (upper) half of the Taegeuk symbol on top, and the four black trigrams positioned correctly: Geon (☰) in the upper left, Ri (☲) in the upper right, Gon (☷) in the lower left, and Gam (☵) in the lower right.
  • Design pitfall: A common mistake is reversing the Taegeuk symbol colors or misplacing the trigrams, which alters the flag's meaning.
