Facts about the flag of Qatar

Date adopted: 9 July 1971

Symbolism: The maroon color represents the bloodshed in the Qatari wars, particularly in the second half of the 19th century. The nine-point serrated line signifies Qatar as the ninth member of the 'reconciled emirates' in the Persian Gulf at the conclusion of the Qatari-British treaty in 1916.

  • Pantone colours: Pantone 1955 C, White
  • Aspect ratio: 11 : 28
  • Hanging protocol: The flag of Qatar is typically hung with the maroon field on the hoist side (left) and the white serrated band on the fly side (right). The serrated edge should point towards the fly end.
  • Design pitfall: A common mistake is confusing the flag of Qatar with the flag of Bahrain, which has a similar design but with a red color and fewer white points on the serrated edge.
