Facts about the flag of Malaysia

Date adopted: 16 September 1963

Designer: Mohamed Hamzah

Symbolism: The 14 stripes represent the 13 member states and the federal government, while the crescent and star symbolize Islam, the country's official religion. The blue canton represents the unity of the Malaysian people.

  • Pantone colours: Pantone 282 C, Pantone 186 C, White, Pantone 109 C
  • Aspect ratio: 1 : 2
  • Hanging protocol: The Malaysian flag is typically hung horizontally with the blue canton (containing the crescent and star) at the top left corner.
  • Design pitfall: A common mistake is reversing the flag so that the blue canton appears on the top right instead of the top left.
