Facts about the flag of Burundi
Date adopted: 28 June 1967
Symbolism: The flag features a white saltire which divides the field into alternating red and green areas. The red symbolizes the struggle for independence, green represents hope and optimism, and white stands for peace. The three stars in the center represent the three major ethnic groups of Burundi: the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa, as well as the national motto: 'Unity, Work, Progress.'
- Pantone colours: Green, Red, White
- Aspect ratio: 3 : 5
- Hanging protocol: The flag of Burundi is typically hung with the white diagonal cross oriented so that the red and green areas are in the correct positions: green triangles at the top and bottom, red triangles on the hoist and fly sides, with the white cross dividing them. The three red stars in the center should be upright and clearly visible.
- Design pitfall: A common mistake is to confuse the orientation of the diagonal cross and the placement of the red stars, sometimes rotating the flag so that the stars are not upright or swapping the positions of the red and green triangles.
